When the United States began working on the Panama Canal after the French gave it up, There was some question about building the canal through Nicaragua. There were actually some things about this country that would have made it easier. But, here was a problem, at least in the minds of some. Nicaragua has volcanoes.
We saw this one from the bus as we traveled to Colonial Leon. It was pretty impressive to see all that smoke.
Colonial Leon was the capitol city at one time. They are working hard to restore and rebuild their cathedral.
We saw many street vendors in this city, some, like this man had carts full of produce. Others carried their wares in baskets on their heads.
The young lady in with the green basket on her head and the backpack followed us from the bus and stayed with us most of the day. We finally ended up buying a ceramic etched pot and a little turtle whistle from her.
The cathedral was quite impressive. The statues were beautiful.
We were glad to find this cafe and some water after walking around the city.
