April Fools!

 Several years ago, when we first lived in North Dakota, my brother Rob's family came to visit on the weekend of April 1st. (Yes, they actually came to North Dakota and NOT in the summer!)  We had a great visit and the day of April first, decided to come up with a fun April Fools dinner.  Over the years the tradition has continued, but with some variation.  Tonight we had Grandma and Grandpa Fifield plus our local kids come and join us for another version of April Fools dinner.  Lisa and kids came over early in the afternoon to help with the cooking and preparation.  Here's how it turned out:

Menu for dinner:

French Dip Sandwiches (with au jus)

Coleslaw

Orange Punch

Grandpa and Diane are enjoying their coleslaw.  The "dressing" is in the can on the table.

Lisa made these French Dip Sandwiches at home and brought them.  Behind the sandwiches you can see the bowl of coleslaw and someone's au jus bowl. 

The sandwiches were especially tasty dipped in the au jus.  See Lee's orange punch?  He already took out the straw.

Menu for dessert:

Brownie Sundaes with hot fudge and toffee 

Green Licorice whips

I didn't get a very good picture of the Brownie Sundaes.  This is actually the plate that Lisa made to take home to Cody.  The real ones had the "ice cream" on top of the brownie, and were much cuter.

Now for the translation:
French Dip Sandwiches = sugar cookies with sesame seeds and put together with chocolate buttercream frosting, dipped in cups of hot chocolate
Coleslaw = shredded apple, strawberries and pineapple with whipped cream squirted on.
Orange Punch = Orange Jello in cups with a straw put in before they set up.
Brownie Sundaes = squares of meatloaf topped with scoops of mashed potato and mushroom onion gravy.  
Green Licorice Whips = roasted asparagus

The tablecloth was upside down, glasses upside down with a spoon inside each one, plates were upside down with a fork on top, napkins on the chairs, and on the upturned glass was the bowl for the coleslaw.
